Brailliance Number 5: File Management

Introduction

Welcome to file management, where we teach you how to, well, manage your files! In all seriousness, this is all about working with files and folders if you need to move anything to other places. Let’s begin!

Opening File Manager

You can open the file manager through the main menu by navigating to it, or pressing “F.” When opened, you will be in the list of internal files and folders of your device. If you land on a folder, a full cell is in front of the name. For instance, “Full cell Books.” Use the navigations methods described in the first article of this site’s section to move around the lists. To go back a level if you were in a folder, press an “E Chord (Escape) to go back. Alternatively, you can navigate to “Back” and press “Enter” there. If you want to look at another drive you have connected to your device, press a “D Chord (Control+D)” to open a list of drives. Select the drive you want and press “Enter,” and proceed as normal.

Selections

Now we get to the good part, selecting files for manipulation. You MUST do that first before you can do anything with multiple files at once. To select or highlight a file, press “Backspace+L (Control+Enter). If done successfully, you’ll see the file or folder name is underlined in braille. Press this same command to unmark a file if you selected the wrong one. To select ALL files in a folder, press “Backspace+Full Cell (Control+a).” This command is also a toggle.

File Manipulation

Now it’s time to actually do something with these highlighted files! Let’s take a look at the commands for the typical actions you would do if you were using a standard computer.

  • copy a file: “Backspace+Y (Control+C)”
  • Paste: “Backspace+V (Control+V)”
  • cut: “Backspace+X (Control+X)”
  • rename: “Backspace+R (F2)” (can only rename one file at a time)
  • delete: (Backspace+dots 2-3-5-6 (Delete”)

New Folders

If you ever need to create a new folder on a flash drive, or if you want to just create a new folder to organize your internal storage, press an “N Chord (Control+N)” from anywhere in the file manager. You will be asked to put in a name for this folder, and after you press “Enter,” you will have a newly created folder where you can then put files in it, as described above.

Ejecting a Drive

It is VERY IMPORTANT that any time you are finished using a flash drive or SD card on your braille device, you must eject it safely before yanking it out of the unit. To do this, from ANYWHERE on the device, press “Backspace+Enter+E (Control+Alt+E).” You will be presented with a list of drives in your unit. Find the one you are looking for and press “Enter.” You will then be told on your braille display that it is safe to remove the drive from the device.

Conclusion

This file manager is the most straightforward and basic one you will find on any device. It does all the essentials without any other fancy bells and whistles. We covered ALL the functionality of it in one article! We hope this helps you be able to manage files easier on device, rather than using a computer to do it! Until next time, enjoy using the device features we’ve covered so far! Happy Management!
